How to select the best filters for your face masks

Filters on face masks can provide essential protection for workers against various hazardous substances. It is vital, however, to ensure that you are using the right filters for the work in hand. Here is a guide to help you choose the best PPE for your purposes.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE CORRECT FILTER FOR THE HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES WORKERS NEED PROTECTION FROM

Respiratory filters are colour-coded and marked with letters to show which particular substances they provide protection from.

STEP 2: FULL FACE OR HALF FACE MASK?

Some filters can only meet minimum standards of protection if they are fitted to a full face mask. You can find some helpful selection charts about which filters must be fitted to full masks and which can be fitted to half masks at these links:

STEP 3: CONSIDER THE INDIVIDUAL WEARER

In addition to making sure the filter you use is adequate to control the hazards, you need to ensure it is suitable for the individual worker, and take into consideration their working environment and the tasks they are doing.

Questions you should ask include:

Does the wearer have medical conditions, or wear spectables?

Does the wearer have facial hair?

Have you ensured that the mask has been correctly fitted to the individual wearer?

To help with this you can use products such as our Qualitative Face Fit Test Kit
